Highway 1 Reopens to Big Sur After Yearlong Closure
Damaged section of scenic coastal road had been closed since January 2023
Governor Newsom announces Caltrans will open portion of roadway
BIG SUR, Calif. - A section of California's scenic Highway 1 leading to the famous Big Sur coast will reopen on Tuesday, Governor Gavin Newsom announced today. The closure at Pauls Slide, around the town of Lucia, has been in effect since January 2023, as crews worked to repair damage caused by a landslide.
